In the southern suburbs of Lyon, in the La Confluence district, an architectural school has been established in the remnants of the former market of the same name. The entire area is currently undergoing revitalization under the direction of the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron. Leading the transformation of the market into an architectural institute is Parisian architect Odile Decq. The curriculum covers a wide spectrum, from California's Chandler Ahrens and Archigram icon Peter Cook to Slovenia's Boštjan Vuga. The school prides itself on the cultural diversity of its teachers and students, which helps them successfully tackle challenges. The renovated market, where the new institute is located, does not strive to be innovative at all costs. The design allows the original structure to stand out. The exterior retains its original character, while inside the spaces had to be adapted for new use. In the large halls, the exposed reinforced concrete structure remains. The rooms are divided into functional zones: studios on the ground floor, workshops in the basement, and supplementary activities on the upper floor. The expansive halls will take some time to fill with students and their work. Meanwhile, preparations for the second round of admissions are underway.
