Brno - Large department stores, but also lamps and jewelry were designed by Brno architect and artist Růžena Žertová. A retrospective of her lifelong work will be exhibited from Friday at the Museum of the City of Brno in Špilberk Castle. The aim is to showcase her activities in the fields of architecture, design, and art craftsmanship. Among the most famous projects by the eighty-year-old Žertová are the Priory buildings in Košice, Pardubice, and Ostrava, as well as the Labe department store in Ústí.
Žertová is known as an architect, at least among the professional public, but as a designer and artist, she has not yet penetrated into wider awareness. The exhibition aims to show that interior designs, original lighting, and handcrafted titanium jewelry are equal complements to Žertová's architectural work.
The first part of the exhibition features architectural projects, including not only department stores but also later works - residential buildings, interiors, and renovations. The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to lighting and jewelry. Žertová often experimented with various technologies and materials.
"The results of these experiments were applied in the designs of titanium jewelry - more like precious items than everyday wear - and fashion accessories," stated Darina Zavadilová on behalf of the exhibition creators.
The exhibition will last until October 20. Visitors will find it in the western wing of Špilberk Castle.
