The exhibition prepared for CNA Ostrava loosely follows last year's exhibition "Environment of Time", which took place at the Drdova Gallery in Prague. Michal Škoda deliberately kept the title of the exhibition, as the Ostrava concept is also based on a free, open cycle that he began working on at the beginning of 2011. Michal Škoda: Environment of Time / Environment of Time II CNA Gallery / March 28 - April 27, 2014 / opening on March 27, 2014 at 5:00 PM
It can be said that this is the author's diary, where through primarily drawing, but also photography, collage, and occasionally small objects, the author responds to the everydayness of his life. "A key" theme / not only in this cycle / for Michal Škoda is architecture and all related questions regarding space and existence within it. As Škoda himself states: “It is a theme that is fundamental to my creation / life. Whenever I am invited to an exhibition, the place - space, disposition possibilities, and the feelings I have about it are very important to me. I then decide how to approach the particular exhibition. For the building where CNA is located, I decided to approach the situation evoking a "home" atmosphere as if it were some sort of "Cabinet," where I try to create a certain environment filled with emotionally selected items from the aforementioned cycle, many of which have not been presented anywhere else so far.” The project that Škoda is currently primarily focusing on, which is the basis of the Ostrava exhibition, stems from his long-term direction. According to the author, it can be characterized in several points: Movement in real time and environment Time and the way - how space can be understood - perception of space Everydayness and its traces A certain archive of memory / thinking / in accordance with a certain analysis of the environment / with everything it offers / through the most economical means… /paper, collage, photo, drawing, print… / creation of records The relationship between the real and the artificial. ---- the question of the authenticity of what we see, experience, what speaks to us, influences us… Relationships "between" - looking - perception - representation Creation of physical experiences in accordance with memory / mental spaces / I am interested in the diary character of the record, where there is a gap "between" - things and our perception of that thing / it can be a piece of paper, as well as monumental or insignificant architecture…/ What creates an environment, what disrupts it Subjectivity in time and space – concreteness versus fiction
A space will arise with an intervention inviting reflection, not an answer, but a record of “fact” – thoughts, doubts, and questions “The work of Michal Škoda surprisingly uncovers and materializes the very soul of the architectural environment, which somehow begins to fade from our everyday life. That is why Michal's work continually resonates with me. His work has the ability to transfer joy to the recipient, which is a goal we should return to, not only in architectural creation.”
Ing.arch. Radim Václavík, Chairman of CNA
Michal Škoda was born in 1962 in Tábor, South Bohemia. He has countless domestic and international exhibitions behind him. His work has naturally evolved through continuous stages from objects and images to spatial installations, primarily wall paintings. In parallel, he engages in drawing, photography, and collage, especially at the level of authorial books, which is gradually becoming evident in his free work as well. Besides his artistic activities, Michal Škoda has been serving as the curator of the House of Art in České Budějovice since 1998, which has long been considered one of the most important venues for the presentation of contemporary international art and architecture.
The exhibition is part of the Archikultura 2014 event The sixth year of the international festival of architecture, design, and art ARCHIKULTURA 2014 is a showcase focused on architectural themes in the broadest sense and builds on previous years of the festival, which took place under the name Architecture Week Ostrava from 2009 to 2012.
The aim of the initiative is, similarly to other European cities (London, Barcelona, Berlin, Oslo, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, etc.), to bring modern and contemporary architecture closer to the general public. Exhibitions, lectures, discussion forums, film screenings, and architectural walks provide opportunities for all interested parties to expand their knowledge about the work of architects, the problems of construction, and possible solutions, to familiarize themselves with the architectural history not only of the city of Ostrava but also to compare the level of its further development with current events in this field worldwide. A specificity and advantage of the Moravian-Silesian region is both its multicultural environment offered at the tripoint of the Czech, Slovak, and Polish republics, as well as its rich history. The aim of the festival is to present urbanism, architecture, design, and art in an educational, inspiring, but also entertaining way, highlighting the impact and influence of these areas of human activity on the locally and simultaneously globally conceived living space of humanity.
