The upcoming exhibition at the Gallery of Architecture in Brno will showcase a cross-section of the work of the significant Brno architect Prof. Ivan Ruller. The exhibition focuses on presenting completed buildings in direct context with less known unrealized projects, with which architect Ruller has achieved success worldwide. The exhibition opening will take place on December 13, 2013, at 18:00. at the Gallery of Architecture Brno, Starobrněnská 18. The exhibition will last until January 31, 2014. The gallery is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00.
The work of architect Ruller, who was born on November 17, 1926, in Brno, clearly shows the influence of functionalism from the 1930s and modernism. He originates from the Brno school, where he studied after World War II under significant architects of that time, including Bohuslav Fuchs and, primarily, Bedřich Rozehnal, with whom he was an assistant even during his studies. According to experts, he "successfully blends the rationally understood aspect of architecture with an artistically conceived exterior and interior into a unified and often very effective emotional composition." It is characteristic of Ruller that the artistic component is always an equal partner to the architect's visions. His exceptional collaboration with artists has contributed to the architectural sophistication of buildings even during the period of socialist construction. He expressed his love for art through membership in several artistic associations. He is one of the founders of the Q Association and the Group 58.
"In architecture, there must be something like humility towards the place,” says Ivan Ruller. He is mainly connected with Brno through his life and work, and therefore he is critical of many urban planning proposals in the city. He is opposed to the relocation of Brno's train station from the center, as well as the transformation of the area near Janáček Theatre into a parking lot. He did not hide his disapproval of the construction of the Great Špalíček. However, he can acknowledge that contemporary architecture also includes many beautiful buildings.
"In organizing the exhibition of the works of architect Ivan Ruller, we found in the professor an incredibly remarkable personality of an artist who, despite celebrating his 87th birthday last month, is still actively working, dedicating himself to his architectural practice, participating in competitions, and teaching at the Faculty of Architecture. His body of work includes approximately 670 projects. The core of the exhibition consists of award-winning competition projects designed both domestically and abroad. For example, the competition design for the town hall building in Amsterdam, the project for the town hall building in Toronto, the opera house in Baghdad, or the design for the New Egyptian Museum in Cairo. A special contrast can be observed in the projects presented through both contemporary graphic methods and modern visualizations, created on computers by the studio Flying Architecture, which participated in the exhibition,” says the curator of the exhibition, architect Martin Enev from the Gallery of Architecture Brno.
