McCullough Mulvin Architects:
Nature Laboratory. Geology/Biology

Contemporary architecture is implemented everywhere, but it strives to achieve significance and importance. Many architects are forced to provide standard ideas reflecting magazine culture; works are quickly consumed, satisfying an audience focused only on what is new. While the state, laws, and high finance pompously speak of supporting architecture, they actually burden it with enormous loads - excessive regulations, demands to explain everything in the name of democracy, and introducing additional levels of management. All of this distracts architects from the decision-making process, drains time that should be devoted to design, and gradually suppresses individual expression, originality, and distinction. True architecture is pushed to the margins - the emphasis is on the monotonous and purposeless promotion of brands and big names, and the level of craftsmanship declines. This should not be the case. The world is suffering greatly from centralization and homogenization, but there is still the possibility to fight for practices in a region, city, or country that care about the quality of place (the professionals in this locally universal world are from RCR in Catalan Olot). The scale of the work is not important. Alejandro Aravena, director of the architectural section of the Venice Biennale 2016, managed to impress with what architects can do - he showcased their results in everyday life, at a scale of 1 mm.

The work of McCullough Mulvin Architects should be viewed in this light; as an attempt to be active on a small island at small scales and to realize things of universal nature. The office is also dedicated to exploring the breadth and depth of architecture beyond standard expressions of form and material, through film and critical writing.

A catalog is published for the exhibition.

Fernández de Córdova & Roda. Houses

The exhibition is a showcase of our work over the past 36 years, concerning standalone houses in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia. I chose this topic because, in my experience, this type of building is the least affected by economic speculation. The exhibition is not meant to showcase branded architecture, does not relate to any specific style, and is purely a reminder of our experiences over time. Our intention is for visitors to realize, while viewing it, how we have discussed various proposals related to function, shape, space, material, construction systems, etc., in our search for a "responsible offer." Our work reflects our attitude toward architecture; we do not believe in absolute truths or manuals, but in continuous searching and experimenting, even at the cost of making mistakes.

The architectural and construction company Fernández de Córdova & Roda was founded in 1984 in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra in South America. Architect Fernández de Córdova L., co-founder and director of FDC&R, graduated in 1979 from the Catholic University of Córdoba in Argentina. In 1997, he received a high award from the Bolivian Architectural Institute for his work, receiving the National Architectural Prize "Emilio Villanueva." Over the course of 32 years, the company has designed and built standalone family houses, residential buildings for larger groups of families, shopping centers, residential development projects, residential complexes, buildings for education, recreational centers, collection points, office buildings, libraries, public spaces, vocational schools, and buildings for various institutions. FDC&R views architecture as a service that brings joy in experimenting and realizing proposals prepared with full responsibility and respect for people and the environment.
