What the stains on the facade of the Tugendhat villa reveal is uncovered by the exhibition Epidermitecture
All naturally occurring stains on facades are usually considered dirt and are constantly removed. What do we arrive at if we begin to take an interest in how the exterior surfaces of buildings should look and why? How can this deepen our understanding of what is growing on them? Epidermitecture deals with organic stains and discoloration created by microorganisms on the exterior surfaces of the Tugendhat villa with the aim of exploring their ability to renew and regenerate both the environment and the surfaces on which they occur. The festive opening of the exhibition by Adam Hudec, which was created based on collaboration between the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Faculty of Architecture at VUT in Brno, will take place in the exhibition spaces of the iconic villa on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at 18:00.
Adam Hudec is a researcher/artist/architect and a PhD student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, who focuses in his multidisciplinary research on physical territory, which he often deconstructs using a set of data to reveal unexpected and hidden anomalies. He operates at the intersection of art, science, and architecture, where interdisciplinarity has become a tool for exploring hidden and invisible phenomena of the environment.
The exhibition is part of an ongoing research project titled “Epidermitecture” at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Faculty of Architecture at VUT in Brno, led by Professor of Architecture Michelle Howard and Katja Steflinger from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
