CONCEPT We encounter the inadequacy of the existing structure of Klementinum for the current library. A cross of corridors, two large hall kidneys, and the staircase at their intersection. A corridor strip with cells along the perimeter. The library, as we commonly perceive it, consists of large halls - reading rooms, freely accessible study places, and storage areas. We lack large spaces for reading rooms, we miss the possibility of storage, and spaces for reading surrounded by books. These make a library. I consider it inevitable to clear Klementinum and adapt it for a library following the logic of the complex. The cross, the peripheral cells. From the beginning, I have been accompanied by the vision of a vast number of books, arranged to suffocation. A large shelf, a hundred times enlarged home library. To emphasize what is missing.
DESIGN As a result, I free up spaces by demolishing cells. The solution allows for high, long free spaces along the corridors for embedding implants. New homes. Independent organisms. The main cross with the staircase and reading rooms remains. Excellent four insertions into the demolished spaces - into the wing towards Platnéřská, on Mariánské náměstí, and two into Křížovnická, connected by existing corridors. The beauty and dignity of the corridors convince me of the necessity of their preservation. The cells of the new structures are library shelves. I will fill the created spaces with the structure formed by them, I count the books, and I find I can start removing. I insert a staircase, variously designed study spots. A large notch into the structure at the location of the demolished chapel of St. Eligia. A machine for books and their reading is created. A mosaic of densely stacked shelves and hollowed-out holes for reading places. I place large storages underneath the newly created spaces.
CAPACITIES Books in free access: up to 3.5 million. Books in storage: unlimited (depth of storage as needed). Study places: 1200
