CONVERSION OF THE MUNICIPAL BATHHOUSE
MASARYKOVA, LIBEREC
JIŘÍ BUČEK / SIAL

Jury Evaluation: Transforming a municipal bathhouse built in a historicizing style at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, according to the typological principles of such buildings at that time, into a gallery of visual arts is a delicate task. This project intelligently embraced the spatial and architectural potential of the existing architecture, complementing it with an additional necessary background for the new function in a separate, simple mass of the new storage facility. The uniquely standing dark prism, connected underground to the main building, along with the alterations to the forecourt and garden, appropriately indicates the new purpose of the historical corpus. The core of the central, multipurpose space of the former swimming pool hall on the ground floor transforms in the underground of the former tank into an impressive exhibition space.
A balanced degree of humility towards the existing historic architecture in relation to the new entries of contemporary expressive language is a fundamental condition for quality architectural work in such tasks. This has been achieved - a cohesive ensemble is being created. The relationship between the historical and the new is maintained in a desirable balance. The mutual interactivity and simultaneously sovereign relationship of historical and contemporary architectural elements is characteristic from details to the whole. Sensitive, but also justifiably forceful material decisions are present, with well-balanced and executed details. The immediate surroundings of the ensemble, its forecourt and public garden are cultivated.
The new function, spaces, and architecture of this project again, although in a different way, appeal simultaneously to our senses and minds, just as the original baths did.
This public investment and the way it is realized is a significant, meaningful cultural achievement.

Overall Evaluation of the Competition

The recently scarred border landscape of Bohemia is receiving new energy through successful interventions. Right from the first day, the revived tradition of Central Europe in the sensitive handling of context and surrounding landscape was a great surprise. Hubáček's example of perceiving landscape and architecture finds its echoes in the new generation of architects. The jury unanimously awarded the main Grand Prix 2014 prize to the conversion of the municipal bathhouse into a contemporary modern gallery and its new compact storage facility. With a sensitive connection of history and modernity, the cultural scene and regional gallery gain new opportunities, and we hope not only for exhibition and storage spaces with multimedia utilization but also for a reassessment of their current activities.Magdalena Jetelová - jury chair

It was very important for us to see as many nominated buildings as possible and to personally experience the site of the construction, including its placement in the landscape and relationship to the surroundings. We traveled through beautiful countryside and some of the visited buildings were truly an integral part of it, clearly expressing the spirit of the place. A lovely and surprising experience was that most of the valuable, quality architecture is the work of young architects. We consider this a clear success of the Czech and Moravian schools of architecture. Nicolò Riva

The announcement of results and the awards ceremony took place on May 13, 2014, at the Gala Evening in the Trade Fair Palace of the National Gallery in Prague.
The exhibition of works lasts until June 13, 2014, in the premises of the NG in Prague and then moves to other Czech and foreign cities.
