Hradec Králové – The city hall of Hradec Králové received 28 proposals for the architectural and artistic competition for the modification of the space with the communist monument Gallery of Honor. The deadline for the first round of the competition was August 29th. The jury should select five candidates for the second round to present more detailed proposals next week. The winning proposal should be known by the end of the year. This was stated today by the deputy mayor for urban planning and heritage care Adam Záruba (Change for Hradec).
The competition concerns the proposal for the modification of the space on U Koruny street, where the communist monument stands in the center. The solution should include a new use for the work from the era of so-called real socialism.
The Gallery of Honor consists of two concrete blocks, at the junction of which is a relief of a large five-pointed star. Most of the letters from the inscription "The people are the main creators of history" remain on one block. During socialism, photographs of distinguished Hradec communists and workers recognized by communists hung on the monument. In the past, the city hall considered demolishing the monument.
The entire area addressed by the architects is delineated by U Koruny street, Sukovy sady, and Gočár boulevard. Contestants could also propose modifications to the entire U Koruny street, which the city has been considering for reconstruction for many years.
The city hall has been preparing the architectural competition since last autumn and announced it in May this year. The competition's brief incorporated not only the comments and opinions of artists, historians, and architects but also public opinions.
The actual reconstruction of the space, which will include the construction of access roads, sidewalks, and new greenery, could, according to Záruba, cost tens of millions of crowns.
