At the end of 2008, the Carlsberg brewery will leave its extensive complex in the center of Copenhagen. This area has enormous historical value, which is why Carlsberg A/S is preparing a major international architectural competition for the design of the regeneration of this area. The goal is to create a new functioning urban district on the site of the former brewery, where the old and new would blend together.
The competition will be announced on November 1 and will run until February 28, 2007. The organizer has already invited the firms BaumanLyons, Behnish Architekten, the Canadian Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden Architects and Urbanists, Enric Miralles Bendetta Tagliabue, and the Dutch firm WEST 8. However, the competition will be open to all interested parties, including students. A total of €400,000 is allocated for prizes. The winner will take away €120,000 from this amount, and the remainder will be distributed at the discretion of the jury. In the second half of 2007, the author of the best proposal will be asked to develop the final design.
I know it may seem quite unbelievable for a Czech reader that a company leaving its production facilities would announce such a competition, but it is true - see here and here.
