Opava - The city of Opava will announce a new competition for the construction of an indoor swimming pool. This was approved today by the city councilors. No one applied for the original competition. Now the councilors have increased the budget for the construction of the pool from 350 to 380 million crowns excluding VAT.

Opava's mayor, Radim Křupala (ČSSD), stated that the original amount was not sufficient in today's construction market. "In addition to the price increase, work is now being completed on optimizing the project. The scope of the contract should remain unchanged, but some things should be done more cheaply," the mayor said.

Construction could begin this autumn, according to him, and the first visitors might swim in the new pool in spring 2020. "The pool still has support from the councilors. The councilors increased the financial coverage for this project by 30 million crowns today, so as soon as we have an adjusted project, we will announce it again, and I believe we will be able to find a contractor," Křupala said.

The new pool has been talked about in the city for a long time. Years ago, the first study was created, according to which the facility was supposed to have two floors and slides leading to the pool. Later, the councilors had the study revised to reduce costs. According to the current city plans, the facility is expected to be single-story, with one swimming pool of 25 meters long and six lanes. The recreational pool should be of the same size, featuring water elements such as jets and a lazy river. It is also expected to include saunas, massage showers, and a buffet.

"We have placed most of the facilities on one floor, so users will not have to go to the basement or to some raised floor; everything is on one level. In our opinion, the project has matured,"
the mayor said.
