Žďár nad Sázavou

Žďár nad Sázavou - Žďár nad Sázavou will be accepting proposals for the design of the area around the House of Culture until October 31. This follows from the public procurement bulletin. The author of the winning proposal will receive 270,000 crowns. In total, the city will distribute 520,000 crowns in rewards. It is not yet decided when the changes will be implemented. So far, according to Tamara Pecková Homolová, the director of the cultural organization Kultura Žďár and also a jury member of the architectural competition, only minor adjustments to the area behind the building are planned.

"I am really looking forward to the proposals because, although I am quite a creative person, the area in front of the cultural house is elusive for me. I am very glad that people who can perceive this place from an unusual perspective and approach it with creativity will be given the space," said Pecková.

According to her, the outdoor space will initially receive minor modifications in the form of a new wooden stage, which will also serve as a relaxation area. It will be located behind the cultural house towards the river. It will offer the possibility of organizing more intimate events, and its structure will protect part of the ventilation system of the cultural house.

The aim of the announced competition is urban, architectural, and landscaping solutions for more than a hectare of space with lawns, greenery, paths, and parking lots, which, according to the town's mayor Martin Mrkos (STAN, for Žďár - a livable city), is relatively neglected and does not attract people to stay. The mayor previously stated that the city wants to have the plans for the modifications ready in case it is possible to apply for grants for such events.

The cultural house stands on the site of original fields and gardens of houses on Dolní street, which were gradually demolished in the second half of the 20th century. Miloslav Lopaur from the historical department of the Žďár museum told ČTK. Among the interesting buildings that used to be there was a tannery and a city distillery. A bit further away was a blacksmith shop and also a shoemaking factory. The distillery was demolished in the 1950s, and other buildings in the 1970s and 1980s. "I think the last thing that remained there was the so-called middle mill, a sawmill," said Lopaur. According to him, the authorities decided on the gradual demolition of the houses on Dolní street as early as 1959 due to planned road expansion.

The House of Culture was built according to the study of architect Milan Blahut from 1977. It was completed in the second half of the 1980s at the edge of a panel housing estate, but close to the historical center of the city.
