The Danish company Carlsberg A/S cordially invites urban planners and architects to an open international competition for the design of the development plan for the Carlsberg brewery site in Copenhagen. At the end of 2008, the Carlsberg brewing company will leave its 33 ha site, a historically significant and art-active location in the center of Copenhagen.
The dream of Carlsberg is to create a new urban area where the old and the new will intertwine. The competitors are tasked with designing the realization of this dream.
Carlsberg has aimed to set only a minimum of limiting conditions for the competitors so that they can convincingly propose their visions and find new possibilities for the future use of existing buildings. The competition is organized in collaboration with the city of Copenhagen and the Danish Chamber of Architects (Architects' Association of Denmark). The goal of Carlsberg was to organize a well-prepared and internationally respected competition. Therefore, they invited the firms BaumanLyons, Behnish Architekten, Canadian Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden Architects and Urbanists, Enric Miralles Benedetta Tagliabue, and the Dutch firm WEST 8 to the competition.
The competition runs from November 1, 2006, to February 28, 2007.
A prize fund of €400,000 is prepared. The winner will take home €130,000 of this amount, while the rest will be distributed at the discretion of the jury (no awarded prize will be less than €5,000). In the second half of 2007, the author of the best proposal will be asked to prepare the final design.
