The Slovak National Gallery is announcing a competition for the selection of an exhibition project and subsequent realization of the exhibition for the 17th International Biennale of Architecture in Venice 2020, which will take place from May 23 to November 29, 2020, at the pavilion of the Czech Republic and Slovakia in Venice. The organizer of the biennale for 2020 will be the Slovak National Gallery. The selection process, announced as non-anonymous, is intended for Slovak as well as foreign architects, visual artists, or historians and theorists of architecture and art. Individual projects are welcome, as well as any types and forms of group collaboration. The general theme is given by the framework of the 17th Architecture Biennale, but the specific theme and project are open. The submitted, previously unrealized projects should present new themes and reflect current global or regional issues (climate crisis, migration, social issues). The context of Slovak architecture is welcome, but it is not a condition. Individuals or competing groups/initiatives are not limited by age, gender, nationality, or citizenship. In the first round of the competition, a jury composed of at least 2 expert staff members from the gallery, 3 representatives of architects and historians from Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and 1 from the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic will select three advancing projects from the submitted proposals. The three selected authors or representatives of authorial collectives will be invited to prepare a study and subsequent presentation before the professional jury, after which one main winner will be selected. The Venice Biennale has been one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world for over 120 years. The history of the Biennale di Venezia dates back to 1895, when the first international art exhibition was held. Since its inception, it has showcased visual arts every two years, later joined by film showcases (Venice Film Festival), architecture (Architecture Biennale), theater, music, and contemporary dance. The first international architecture exhibition took place in 1980.
