The best design for the renovation of Plzeň's Jiráskovo Square with the monastery garden was created by re:architekti
A park square with various forms of relaxation, an open space under the trees with views of the church's dominant feature, and a sensitive solution for the monastery garden involving a water element – this is the basic vision of the re:architekti studio for the future form of the Plzeň Slovans center. The jury of the architectural competition Prize of the Proměny Foundation 2017 awarded this design as the best of the five that participated in the invited competition. All proposals will be presented to the public in an outdoor exhibition installed directly on Jiráskovo Square from June 21. The organization of the architectural competition Prize of the Proměny Foundation 2017 is part of the support provided by the foundation to the City District of Plzeň 2 – Slovany for the implementation of a large-scale project. Its aim is the complete revitalization of the historic center of the Plzeň neighborhoods of Petrohrad and Slovany, which includes Jiráskovo Square and the monastery garden. The architectural competition, which sought answers on how the entire area could transform in the coming years, was announced in February, and five invited teams participated. “The competition brief was very complex due to the extent of the area being addressed, and evaluating the proposals was demanding as we received five strong architectural concepts,” summarizes Jitka Přerovská, director of the Karel Komárek Proměny Foundation. “The competition jury positively assessed how the winning proposal captured the specific character of Jiráskovo Square. I personally like that it restores dignity to the space while creating conflict-free conditions for fulfilling one of the main requirements, which was the social revitalization of the entire area. I also appreciate the provision for further participation, which has accompanied this project from the very beginning. Locals will thus be able to engage, for example, in designing the symbolism of ornaments on the square, finding the form of a community area in the monastery garden, or finalizing the space in front of the school.” The basic principle of the proposal by re:architekti is the clear definition of individual spaces, clarifying and initiating various events. The architects bring a clear and uncomplicated solution for transportation and appropriate water management. They widen sidewalks and narrow roadways. They confirm the space in front of the monastery as a park square with the possibility of various forms of relaxation while preserving its memory in the form of horse chestnut trees. The bus terminus is transformed into a tranquil park, and they create a school garden from the kindergarten. They retain the intimacy and seclusion of the monastery garden. In the competition jury, which evaluated all five proposals, alongside representatives of the city and foundation sat independent architects, urban planners, and landscape architects.
The jury decided on the ranking as follows: 1st place / re:architekti studio s.r.o. 2nd place / Ing. Akad. arch. Jan Šépka 3rd place / PROJEKTIL ARCHITEKTI s.r.o. 4th place / MgA. Ing. arch. Michal Fišer 5th place / D3A, spol. s r.o.
All competition proposals will be presented at an exhibition, which will be part of the Landscape Festival 2017 taking place this year in Plzeň. The opening will take place on Saturday, June 21, in the square space in front of the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. The authors of the winning proposal will simultaneously present their concept to the public for the first time. The exhibition will last until September, when another meeting with the locals is planned. The further schedule of the project anticipates more extensive processing of individual stages of project documentation, so the initiation of construction and vegetation modifications should not begin before 2019. The opening of the revitalized square to the public is planned for 2022. The project for the renovation of Jiráskovo Square and the monastery garden in Plzeň, whose estimated costs are estimated at 110 million crowns, will be co-financed by the Karel Komárek Proměny Foundation, the City District of Plzeň 2 – Slovany, and the city of Plzeň. The project is the result of broader partnership cooperation, significantly involving the Pěstuj prostor association, the Dominican Monastery in Plzeň, and Masaryk Primary School. Competition proposals, the protocol on the course of the competition, including the jury's evaluation and other materials are available on the foundation's website.
