Brno - Brno plans to build apartments for thousands of people in the Černovice district in the area of Na Kaménkách. The council today approved seven participants for an urban planning competition for the design of the area and a call for submissions of competition proposals. Mayor's assistant Martin Ander (SZ) told reporters that the results of the competition should be available in September, and the first construction work could begin in three to four years. According to him, the city does not yet know how many houses will be built or what the cost will be. The majority will be constructed by the city hall, with a smaller portion by a private investor. There will be spaces for services and community amenities.

The Na Kaménkách area has long been designated for residential development. The city hall announced a competition, to which 13 applicants signed up. Ultimately, seven experts will create a design, of which one will be chosen as the winner. "We are trying to find the best possible project. It cannot be said how many apartments there will be. The competition will show how many can be accommodated in such a way that it is pleasant living, but does not negatively impact the surroundings," stated Ander.

According to him, transportation needs to be resolved, and not just apartments will be built. "Public spaces, services, educational facilities, and other amenities that a person needs will be included. It is necessary to say that the development will not take place all at once but will occur in phases. Generally, it can be said that we plan to create housing for a few thousand people," added Ander.

The results of the competition are expected in September. "Immediately thereafter, design work, land decisions, and building permits will follow. However, it is not realistic to expect construction to start within a timeframe of three to four years," stated Ander.

The city intends to rent the apartments. Currently, it has about 27,000 apartments. It is also considering other locations for apartment construction. Recently, it approved the drafting of a study on the potential construction of apartment buildings on Lány Street in the Bohunice district and on Šedová Street in the Vinohrady district.
