Joost Wander Hovenier graduated from the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture in 1996, having previously studied civil engineering in Amsterdam. He worked in architectural offices Rudy Uytenhaak and UNStudio. Subsequently, he founded the company Wingender Hovenier Architecten with Jan Peter Wingender, and after Uri Gilad joined, the firm was renamed Office Winhov.
In addition, Hovenier taught at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture (1998-2016), was a board member of Stawon/BNA (2004-08), and served on the advisory committee for the environmental quality of the city of Haarlem (2005-15).
