He was born in Frankfurt am Main and after graduating from high school in Stuttgart, he studied architecture at the Technical University of Vienna. From 1986 until the completion of his studies in 1990, he worked as a student assistant. Subsequently, he worked for architects Sepp Müller and Helmut Richter. In 1994, he obtained his construction engineering license and co-founded the office company Dunkl/Erhartt with Gerd Erhartt.
In 1998, Gerd Erhartt, Peter Sapp, and Michael Zinner, who left in 2004, founded the architectural firm "querkraft", which gained international recognition for its unconventional and economical solutions.
In addition to his architectural practice, Dunkl also served as a lecturer at the Technical University of Vienna (1996-2004, visiting professor 2009) and at Roger Williams University in the USA (2001, 2004). From 2010 to 2012, the architect also acted as the spokesperson for Plattform Baukultur.
