Biography
Gabriel Orozco is a visual artist who was born in the capital of the Mexican state of Veracruz into the family of painter and university professor Mario Orozco Rivera. At the age of six, he moved to San Ángel, a suburb of Mexico City, where his father obtained a number of commissions for mural frescoes. From 1981 to 1984, he attended the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Xochimilco, which he found too conservative for his taste. From 1986 to 1987, he lived in Madrid, where he attended the private art school Circulo de Bellas Artes. After returning to Mexico, he held weekly meetings at his home for five years with other artists, creating a strong artistic platform. Orozco gained global acclaim in the early 1990s thanks to his drawings, photographs, sculptures, and installations. In December 2009, the New York MoMA held a major retrospective exhibition for him, which traveled through galleries worldwide. Gabriel Orozco currently lives and works in New York, Mexico, and France.
