Biography
Friedrich (Fritz) Lehmann was a German-speaking architect and educator from Prague who worked in Austria after World War II.
Friedrich Lehmann was born into the family of a train driver in Šluknov. He graduated from a real gymnasium in Děčín. From 1910 to 1914, he studied at the German Technical University in Prague. In August, he was conscripted into the army and spent the war on the Eastern Front, including three years in Russian captivity. After the war, he studied at the Technical University in Vienna (approximately 1918-20). He took his second state exam again in Prague on June 30, 1920.
By the end of his studies in Prague, he was already working as an assistant in the department of freehand drawing, ornamental drawing, and residential architecture. In the academic year 1919-20, he taught interior architecture, and from February 1920 to September 1921, he was an assistant to Professor Franz Schwertner (1858-1922). After his death, he was entrusted with substitution but was not invited to compete for this professorship. Hans Döllgast was selected by the school administration. After a series of lengthy negotiations, he was appointed as an extraordinary professor in 1927, but ultimately refused to take up the position in Prague for family reasons. Thus, a new competition was held in 1929. This time, Otto Straeche was selected, with Lehmann recommended in second place. The Ministry of Education refused to appoint Straeche, asserting that the position should preferentially go to a domestic candidate. Despite protests from the school administration, Lehmann was eventually appointed as an extraordinary professor, taking over the department on June 15, 1929. He was appointed as a full professor on April 6, 1935.
On October 26, 1928, he became a Doctor of Technical Sciences. From October 20, 1933, he was a member of the Chamber of Engineers. In the 1936-37 and 1937-38 academic years, he served as the dean of the faculty. From the academic years 1937-38 to 1941-42, he was a member of the examination commission for awarding the second state exam.
Since the early 1920s, he also worked in the design studios of his professors Karel Jaray and Artur Payr. He wrote critiques and columns for the newspaper Prager Tagblatt.
In 1941, he was proposed for appointment as an ordinary Reich professor. He was appointed only after several delays on March 12, 1943. He taught until the beginning of 1945.
Lehmann's family was not displaced as part of the expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia. In 1946, he moved to Austria, where he served as a full professor at the Technical University of Vienna while also continuing his design work.
