BiographyFranz knight von Neumann the younger was an Austrian historicizing architect and politician. He came from an architectural family. His father Franz von Neumann the elder (1815–88) and his younger brother Gustav von Neumann (1856–1928) were renowned Viennese architects. He was a student of the Viennese architects
Eduard van der Nüll,
August Sicard of Sicardsburg, and
Friedrich von Schmidt, with whom he later collaborated and designed the arcade houses in the town hall square in Vienna (1878–83). He then worked largely independently. He focused primarily on the design of villas, residential and office buildings, and also designed churches. In the early stages of his work, he concentrated exclusively on neo-Renaissance architecture, later expanding his work to include other historicizing styles. Among his significant achievements are buildings in the Czech lands, such as the town hall in Liberec and Frýdlant, as well as the lookout tower on Praděd. He began his political career in 1891 as a member of the city council, where he served until 1895. From 1889 to 1900, he was a member of the council of representatives of the Vienna district.
