BiographyManuel Pinheiro Fernandes de Sá studied architecture in 1968 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Porto and in 1970 completed a degree in urbanism at the University of Manchester in England. In 1972, he began teaching at ESBAP as an assistant professor and later moved to the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Porto, where he served as a full professor. In addition to his academic career, he worked as an architect and expert on the modernization of urban and public spaces. He was responsible for coordinating the urban plan of Porto, advising on the urban project of Santiago de Compostela (1988-89), and coordinating the Center for Architecture and Urban Studies at FAUP. In 1990, he received the architecture award from the National Institute for Housing.
