Biography
Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi was born in 1927 in the western Indian city of Pune (Poona). He studied in Pune and at the J. J. School of Art in Mumbai. Since 1950, he worked with Le Corbusier on his projects in Ahmedabad and Chandigarh. In 1956, he established his own practice in Ahmedabad and in 1962 founded the Vastu-Shilpa Foundation for the study and research of environmental design, which collaborated with the McGill School of Architecture on many successful projects. Since 1977, he has worked as a partner at the office of Stein, Doshi & Bhalla.
B.V. Doshi has created architecture over the years that relies on a sensitive embrace and translation of modern architecture into Indian contexts. His interest in environmental and urban issues makes him an exceptional philosopher and teacher. The sense of architectural scale, form, and space is palpable in most of his works. Doshi's architecture represents one of the most important examples of modern Indian architecture.
