Two Amsterdam animal shelters merged into one building, creating the largest shelter in the Netherlands. The site is located on the outskirts of the city and has a completely unsuitable wedge-shaped form. The usual "honeycomb model" for this function creates a long service corridor, off of which dog kennels with separate small outdoor runs are arranged at right angles. The chosen solution is dominated by grids, and the shelter resembles a prison.
This resulted in a service corridor and a series of dog shelters converging into the Amsterdam Animal Rescue Center. This created a long structure resembling a thin ribbon. The band-like structure is then wrapped around the canal bordering the site. Inside the shelter, two large enclosures for animals were created.
The entire building faces inward to prevent excessive noise (barking!) from spreading to the surroundings. Above the dog houses, there is accommodation for cats, which forms another sound barrier against the outside world. The central location of the entrance helps define the final shape of the house, resembling a flowing object. The building manages to hide thanks to a façade made of pixelated grass located on an old embankment right next to the building.
