Water tower with a view of Trosky

Water tower with a view of Trosky
Assignment
New construction of a water tower and lookout tower.
"Why do people climb to the tops of hills and watch the line of the horizon? It gives them a sense of identity – here I am, this is my land, it is my emotional thought context. I belong here!" Václav Cílek
Why build a lookout tower when I am on a hill with a beautiful view of the landscape in all directions? I decided to integrate the lookout tower into the water tower structure and make them one unit.

Architectural solution
Field furrow. Naturally, as paths arise, furrows appear in the field, reacting to an obstacle. An obstacle that must be circumvented – along the trajectory of a curve. A wave has formed at the edge of the field. A wave that does not obstruct. It gently expands into space to draw us into its world and reveal the landscape beneath us. Thus, a new earth formation is created, outlined by concrete walls. The water tower is covered with an earthen embankment and planted with hayfield mixtures. The embankment forms an artificial hill in the shape of a field furrow, so it blends naturally into the landscape. Visitors walk along the embankment, which evokes the nearby Emperor's Corridor in the Prachov Rocks. At its end, a view of Trosky and the surrounding area appears before them, with the possibility of sitting in an artificially created cave from the front of the water tower and enjoying the distant view.

Technical solution
Concrete monolith with 300 cubic meters of water stored underground. It does not deviate from the standard technical constructions of this type.

Conclusion
The construction had higher goals than just being an observation point or an object lost in the field. It was meant to be the first swallow of this type of building because water towers are usually not made accessible to the public. Suddenly, there is a structure that is not surrounded by a fence. I also worked with an educational, ecological dimension, playfulness, and attractiveness for passersby and drivers, including a source of flowing water. All of this would require cooperation from the investor and the people who had the construction process in their hands. Unfortunately, this did not happen.
