Wine House Velke Zernoseky

Wine House Velke Zernoseky
Completion:2020-21
Area:18 m2

Context
A vineyard house for an authentic winemaker, on a vineyard in Velké Žernosky. Wine has been grown in this area since the 12th century, when the first vineyards were established by Cistercian monks on the slopes around the Elbe River. The winemaker farms here in an authentic way, favouring vine-growing practices that take into account the principles of organic farming, excluding all herbicides and synthetic insecticides. The wine must be treated and harvested exclusively by hand. The aim is to increase the long-term fertility and biological activity of the soil. The farmhouse is designed with these principles in mind, as nature and landscape friendly and off-grid.

Form
The brief was to create a space for storage, wine production and living in the vineyard. The building is divided into two parts and is covered with a gable roof. The inner part serves as a storage and resting area and is equipped with a wood-burning stove for heating in the colder seasons. The attic provides space for occasional sleeping or relaxing. The outside shaded terrace is designed for seasonal work, housing a hand crusher and wine press during the harvest. Exterior terrace overlooks the entire vineyard, the Elbe River and the setting sun over the North Bohemian volcanic landscape.
The structure of the building is wooden with larch cladding and a tin roof. The whole building is without connection to the mains. At the back of the house there are rainwater retention tanks, which is used for farming needs.
