The northern Dutch city of Groningen celebrated the 950th anniversary of its founding in 1990. The local city hall has been collaborating with internationally recognized architects for many decades. On the occasion of the anniversary celebrations, Daniel Libeskind was invited to create an urban concept for new 'Citymarks' at the city’s access roads. One of the ten installations was designed by Libeskind in collaboration with John Hejduk, and he commissioned other professionals (artists, writers, choreographers, and philosophers) for the remaining projects.
A year later, the museum in Groningen held a festival 'What a Wonderful World! Musicvideo's in architecture', inviting five deconstructivists. Peter Eisenman, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Bernard Tschumi, and Coop Himmelb(l)au were tasked with designing a temporary pavilion in the park near the museum. For some architects, this was their very first realization. Koolhaas’s 'Miesian' stop and Tschumi’s glass pavilion can still be seen at their original locations. The movable pavilion by Coop Himmelb(l)au, which stood at the site of today’s new museum, has been relocated to in front of the Groningen Seaports building in Delfzijl in the north of the city, where it now serves only as a sculpture.
