Outdoor Year-Round Classrooms

Outdoor Year-Round Classrooms
Lessons were created with the support of the Department of Education of the MHMP, which has long been striving to improve the environment of Prague schools. Getting children outside, into a different environment was the idea of Filip Kuchař; a year-round heated classroom is a shift from seasonal structures in school gardens to a new level.
The project has aimed from the very beginning to create new educational possibilities and opportunities, to enhance spaces that will naturally stimulate discussion and reflection in the fields of education, ecology, and health. It focuses on improving learning processes regardless of the subject. It will offer children, students, and teachers new stimuli and inspire them to engage in activities that they could not otherwise carry out or could only do in a limited capacity.
A classroom placed in the middle of the school garden thus naturally encourages experimentation, inquiry, research, discovery, observation, while also providing a safe and stable environment. The transition of educational activities outdoors also addresses the issue of insufficient outdoor time for today's children.
The year-round outdoor classroom is designed as an insulated and lit space, fully glazed on three sides, thus significantly connecting the space with the surrounding nature. The outdoor classroom allows for teaching in almost the same manner as in a regular classroom, but also for conducting leisure activities. The classroom is equipped similarly to a seasonal classroom, but with the introduction of electricity and water supply, it aims to become a new and unique space suitable for the introduction of innovative elements into education. Thus, the classroom can also be equipped with an interactive display or a Wi-Fi router, for example, for using a tablet with measuring sensors for scientific exploration. This classroom also motivates teachers to think, seek new paths, try something new, and also provides the opportunity to educate outdoors and in a slightly different way.
