The main characteristic of this complex is the use of alternative energies, primarily solar energy. The concept of the building is manifested in the layout of the masses by creating a 300-meter long southern impact corridor, which is capped on the northern side by a comb-like arrangement of laboratory or office tracts oriented to the east and west. The public corridor serves in the winter to accumulate heat gained from solar radiation, while in the summer it is ventilated with air cooled by the adjacent water reservoir. Functionally, the corridor serves as a respiratory space for the offices, where shops, an information center, a restaurant, and necessary facilities are located. Worth mentioning is the energy meter, which tracks the energy produced by the battery of collectors on the roof of the building since its commissioning. The scientific park in Gelsenkirchen is a textbook example of solar architecture.
