The Swing garden project is located in the small town of Wallisellen in the Swiss canton of Zurich. It consists of publicly accessible gardens of a department store built on the roof of underground garages.
These small worlds, separated from the surrounding environment by an intense green screen, create a striking contrast to the adjacent tall buildings and directly contrast with the clean and uniform surfaces of the facades. They are designed as three separate spaces telling three different stories. Their isolation is enhanced by metal fences (around each garden separately), covered with climbing plants. The total area of the gardens is approximately 1200 m².
The complex of three gardens is intended to serve as a refreshing element in the dense development of administrative buildings. The areas are equipped with resting spots with benches and tables that are frequently used by employees from surrounding offices.
The first garden – nestled among pines and maples is a large number of soft, delicate, and airy grasses. Visitors walk through the garden on concrete stepping strips. The plantings are set in brick-colored gravel. Species composition: Pinus nigra – black pine, Acer tataricum – Tatar maple, Stipa sp – feather grass, Cytisus sp. - broom
The second garden – ginkgos are planted in rough stone fields. Visitors walk through the garden on circular concrete fields. The impression is slightly softened by ferns used in the underplantings, but the overall feel is very rough and, in a good way, rather clumsy. A journey to prehistoric times. Species composition – Ginkgo biloba – ginkgo, Rhododendron sp. – rhododendron, Dryopteris filix-mas – male fern, Geranium sp. – geranium, Alchemilla mollis – lady's mantle.
The third garden - here, metasequoias clearly dominate. A fragmented stone path shatters into various nooks and leads visitors gradually through the entire garden. The plantings are complemented by prominent shrubs that turn red in autumn. Species composition – Metasequoia glyptostroboides – Chinese metasequoia, Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata‘ – yew, Corylopsis – Corylopsis, Prunus sp. - cherry
Climbing plants around the gardens: Parthenocissus quinquefolia – Virginia creeper, Lonicera henryi – Henry's honeysuckle, Hedera helix – common ivy, Clematis tangutica – Tangut clematis.
