To you who have seen the film Lost in Translation, you will surely remember Bill Murray's line: "For relaxing times make it Suntory time." The Suntory company is known primarily for producing alcoholic beverages.

The Suntory Museum was established on November 3, 1994, as part of the 90th anniversary celebration of the Suntory company. The museum is located in the harbor village of Tempozan in the heart of Osaka Bay, where the company originally began. A strip of land owned by the city separated the building site from the shoreline. However, Ando sought to extend the museum all the way to the waterfront. The local ministry demanded the safest possible harbor embankments, making it very difficult to advocate for the idea of a square right by the shore. Ultimately, it was possible to realize a museum with a large square descending to the water (40 x 100 meters), where people meet, concerts take place, or family outings occur on weekends. To enhance safety, a new wave break was built in the sea, 70 meters from the shore.
The cultural complex itself is located in the northern part of the area and looks like a truncated cone expanding upwards, into which two blocks are embedded. Each of the volumes has its own function. The cone houses the IMAX Theater, while the two prisms contain galleries and a restaurant. These two massive volumes made of prestressed reinforced concrete have glass front facades. The window from the restaurant and Sky Lounge faces Kobe, while the window from the gallery offers a beautiful view of the ocean, where the sun sets beyond the horizon every day. The exhibitions held in the gallery present art in an "easily understandable and entertaining form." The institution itself owns a collection of 15,000 posters by Alphonse Mucha, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Adolphe Mouron Cassandre. The IMAX theater, which represents the core of the complex, has a capacity of 446 seats. The image is projected onto a screen measuring 20 x 28 meters, and the spatial perception is enhanced by a six-channel digital sound system with a power of 15,000 watts. The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) practically demonstrated the use of solar energy in the construction of the museum in 1993. This system still partially covers the museum's energy needs today.
