The eight-thousand population of Wolfurt lies at the foot of the Bregenz Forest, southeast of Lake Constance. Wolfurt, which stretches along the north-south road leading from Březnice to Dornbirn, has two natural centers: the old upper part with a church, rectory, and cemetery, and the new lower part with the municipal office, community center, elementary and music schools, sports hall, and the community hall “cubus.” The latter project was completed twenty years ago based on the winning design by twenty-five-year-old student of the Vienna University of Technology, Andreas Cukrowicz, who collaborated with local architect Lothar Huber for the realization. The community hall is located at the intersection between the old community center and the second stage of the elementary school. In front of the entrance to the hall lies a square park designed by a duo of Swiss architects Dieter Alfred Kienast and Günther Vogt. The now mature greenery serves to filter noise from the transit road but also as a dispersal area during cultural events. The hall, which has a capacity of up to 650 seated spectators, is used for concerts, conferences, assemblies, presentations, fashion shows, and trade exhibitions. The exterior of the building is clad in dark panels made of local slate. The façade is generously glazed, and the entrance is highlighted by a stainless steel awning. The floors, walls, and ceiling in the main hall are made of wooden strips. When acquiring the sound and lighting equipment, the highest possible standard available at the time was chosen.
The footprint of the two-story building can functionally be divided into quarters: the first quarter is taken up by the entrance foyer, from which one can reach the upper balcony via the staircase; the next two quarters represent the main hall that spans both floors, and the last quarter consists of the stage, which can be supplied directly from the rear parking lot.
In 2000, Cukrowicz and Nachbauer won a competition for the reconstruction and expansion of the adjacent secondary school, which completes the southern side of the new square in Wolfurt.
