The atmosphere of the reconstructed typical interwar apartment, at the owner's request, was to embody a combination of ethnic and boho styles. In the new interior, Czech elegance from the early 19th century intertwined with a touch of Asia, resulting in a modern, timeless, and understated luxurious apartment in pastel tones combined with luxurious materials.
A Touch of ExoticaThe exotic interior in the newly reconstructed interwar building could have been a big challenge. Interior designer Iva Hájková skillfully managed the task and created the right atmosphere. The apartment won the Journalist's Choice Award in the Interior of the Year competition.
Seemingly incompatible elements were linked by interior designer Iva Hájková in the interwar apartment in Prague's Žižkov district. A major wish of the investor was an interior in the ethnic and boho style, which thanks to mutual trust and listening was successfully integrated into the older building. The result is an apartment where the roots of Czech interwar elegance blend with a touch of Asia, creating a modern, timeless, and understatedly luxurious flat. An apartment where soft pastel colors combined with luxurious materials create a harmonious and stylish atmosphere even in a boldly chosen minimalist setting.
The apartment is designed as a 3+kk layout. A glass wall can separate the main living space from the study, which contains a foldable bed. In a moment, an intimate bedroom can be created. The living room is designed as a zen space for listening to music, chatting, and relaxation. Other features of the apartment include a walk-in closet, a children's room, and a bathroom with a separate toilet.
Calm AtmosphereThe calm and exotic atmosphere of the apartment is depicted in even the smallest details. An example is a unique table that represents the water surface. Just imagine having dinner by a favorite lake, with the rustling reeds behind you and the sun setting above. The table is carved into an organic shape and made from several layers of plywood, featuring delicate waves evoking the water on the lake. Thanks to its glass legs, the table appears to levitate above the ground.
Iva Hájková added chairs made of natural rattan, referencing the reeds. A piece of marbled Statuarieto stone is used on the wall, bringing luxury into the interior and expressing the rock by the lake. Above the table hangs an interwar brass chandelier that evokes the sun. Instead of typical crystal, miniature glass beads representing the setting sun on the horizon are suspended from it. This composition is the central idea of the entire apartment.
Atypical DetailsIn addition to thoughtful and almost poetic details, the apartment is very low maintenance. Most elements were cleverly hidden by designer Iva Hájková in built-ins and a hidden closet. The majority of the apartment's furnishings are custom-designed. Even the smallest details, such as handles, legs, fittings, and even the kitchen cabinet for the range hood, hidden nook behind the marble wall cladding, and hinges, were custom-made. Everything was manufactured from brushed brass, giving a modern impression while still referencing times long past.
The gem of the interior is the floor – terrazzo tiles, 3 cm thick, imported directly from Italy. The colors of the stones in the floor are echoed throughout the entire interior. Since it is real terrazzo, the thickness of the tiles allows future generations to awaken its beauty simply by polishing it. This flooring was also used instead of traditional window sills.
Iva Hájková chose frameless doors for the interior, maintaining a tranquil atmosphere in the hallway. Behind the mirror cleverly hides the electrical infrastructure. The apartment was equipped with a sound system from a Czech manufacturer, which elegantly complements not just the acoustic aspect but also the material and color composition of the apartment.
The collaboration throughout the entire project was very inspiring and creative for both parties. Initially, there was enthusiasm for the idea and main concept, followed by a great space for creativity and brainstorming, without any limitations from the investor. Due to the absolute trust between the client and the designer, even ideas that initially seemed crazy were pursued. It was precisely this trust that resulted in an apartment with an atmosphere of interwar elegance, featuring small elements alluding far to the east, which you discover only upon closer inspection.
