W. M. Dudok emerged from the famous Berlage School. He dedicated most of his career to the city of Hilversum, where he served as the director of public works (1915-28) and later as chief architect (1928-54). In a relatively short time, he managed to create a number of remarkable works in the rapidly flourishing Hilversum, including the northern cemetery (Noorderbegraafplaats) from the late 1930s. At this cemetery, Dudok found his and his wife's final resting place.
Dudok describes his lifelong endeavors as follows: “For me, architecture is, just like music, an art of proportions. I completely renounce the traditional expression of monumentality and try to bring life into my work through the effect of material and its movement and rhythm. Detail is, of course, subordinated to the whole, having its own subordinate significance. I seek rich articulations of mass, powerful groupings, in short, a plastic impression and strive to achieve the most powerful expression with the simplest means.”
Styl IV (IX, 1923-24), s. 99-105
