Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2001

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2001
Libeskind and his collaborators managed the entire project from the beginning of construction to realization in an incredible timeframe of four months. Uniquely, it bears his own name: Eighteen Turns. The structure is based on Libeskind's interest in constructing according to the origami principle. The pavilion is made from aluminum panels layered and interconnected in the shape of a spiral: “Each of the four sections of the structure consists of three panels that function spatially as independent units. The first panel rising from the ground transitions into a natural arch that connects with the first panel of the next section. The last arch of the final section is then anchored back in the ground.”
A similar construction principle can be seen in Libeskind's later design for the World Trade Center.
