Humno is the heritage of the investor, along with other agricultural buildings on a vast flat plot of land in the middle of the village of Veličná. Its aim, besides creating housing for his family, was to preserve this legacy to the maximum possible extent while also maintaining the standards of modern living. The material compatibility with the original building was also important to him, so he decided to use exclusively natural building materials during the reconstruction.
Although the humno was in very well-preserved condition, for the maximum preservation of its original appearance, we approached the new construction as a static new form. It is embedded in the barn on its own foundations, and the humno became its shell.
The original agricultural building in the adjacent wing had to be renovated, but the material from it was used in the construction.
The spatial, mass, and functional solution is significantly influenced by the original structure of the humno. Not only its outer shell but also the structural elements that pass through the building. We did not remove a single original element, nor did we make any replacements. This, for example, determined the ceiling height in the central space as well as the atypical arrangement of the spaces. The wooden cladding of the humno remained in some parts in its original position, in some places, it was moved inward and became the facade of the building itself, where this setback is larger, a covered terrace was created. The original century-old roofing is gradually supplemented by pieces of original glass tiles that have been acquired over time. Daylight was successfully brought into the interior through high glazing and the transparency of the facade created by perforating the wooden cladding or by rotating cladding boards.
