Revitalization of the center of Náchod

Revitalization of the center of Náchod
Architect: ASMM | Alexandr Skalický
Project:9/2001
Completion:2001

Náchod is a historical town with 25,000 inhabitants. It is therefore not very large. To this day, only its structural historical skeleton from the past has been preserved. It has very few historical monuments. The most valuable constructions built in the town, which form the largest collection, are modern architecture from the first half of the 20th century. The project for the revitalization of the city center presents a strategy that could be applied to the design of architecture and urbanism not only in Náchod but also in other similar towns.
The project represents a lighter form of urbanism, situated on the border between the traditional urban system with streets and building structures made up of isolated houses, which scatter the urban system. The mentioned strategy offers a solution that does not obstruct people and provides ample space for living in the city.
The idea behind the proposed buildings in the town was to organize the disrupted environment. To design the optimal size of development in relation to the existing form of the city structure. To choose the functionality of spaces that corresponds to the realistic needs of the city. Thus, the city is not overburdened. The new building system within the obsolete structure of the city effectively shapes urban space. The existing potential is utilized appropriately, leaving the city with enough free areas. Nature can become a part of the city. The quality of the place is enhanced, and the decayed structure is reinforced. The spatial relationships in the city, unlike the current situation, are readable again. The house designs are based on the fact that the environment dictates the optimal height of development concerning the already constructed buildings. The height of the floor placed within the building is essential. For commercial purposes, a maximum of the two lowest floors can be used. Offices may be on the next level, and higher up are apartments. The houses are designed to be relatively narrow. This way, there will be enough free space at the level of the urban ground floor. The city today does not need houses with large usable areas. With conventional construction methods, buildings with the same area as those in the design would be realized, but they would be low and have fewer floors. The houses are designed to be directionally oriented. So they have a front and back side. Their appearance can better contribute to the readability of the environment. The houses are placed in the environment with a certain degree of aggression. They are not positioned to blend in with the environment. They are designed to organize the environment. The height of the objects allows for the use of climbing plants on the facade, and the forced element of position can be limited by natural factors.
