Reconstruction of a cottage in the Jizera Mountains

Reconstruction of a cottage in the Jizera Mountains
Collaboration:Kateřina Zabadalová, Jan Gadziala
Completion:2017-19
Built Up Area:181 m2

The cottage is located on a sloping clearing in the middle of a forest by a stream in the village of Kořenov in the Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Area. It is a new building in the footprint and volume of the original cottage. Historically, there was a reconstruction of a former industrial building into a mountain guesthouse. The task was to transform the cottage into a modern recreational facility that offers mountain accommodation with relaxation and leisure.
During the reconstruction, hidden static defects in the load-bearing structure were discovered, and a complete demolition of the existing building had to take place. The new cottage retains the original shape and location. A new extension has been added at the level of the first floor to the original rectangular floor plan of the cottage, which visibly separates the historical part of the house and expands the main living space. The house is complemented by roof dormers that sufficiently illuminate the upper bathrooms and staircase.
The cottage is three floors high and offers three separate apartments with a shared entrance in the basement, connected by a central staircase. On the ground floor, there is the main living area with a private staircase leading to the attic, where there are two private bedrooms and a bathroom. In the second half of the ground floor is the second 3+kk apartment. The third 3+kk apartment is located in the attic. The basement features a shared wellness area with a Finnish sauna and technical facilities.
The material solution is based on the traditional context of the Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Area and the existing building. The basement is clad in stone, forming the base of the entire house. Wooden windows, stone sills, and natural lime plaster are used. The extension is clad with traditional weatherboarding, and unlike the original mass of the house, large format windows are used here. The roof is made of standing seam metal.
