The attic conversion was part of the overall reconstruction of a tenement house. The Art Nouveau building had been damaged and neglected over time and through use, but it remained authentically original. The goal was to find the original state of the house and restore the historical elements with minimal interventions. There were two major interventions: the addition of an elevator - a self-supporting steel tower with a glass facade, which touches the balconies on the courtyard facade in such a way that it does not disrupt the house, and the attic conversion of a residential unit. The investor's brief was defined as creating a spatially and dispositionally generous attic apartment covering an area of approximately 200 m², with facilities and a terrace, including all interior furnishings and furniture. No further specifications were given for the brief; the future number of users, the number of rooms, bathrooms, their equipment, and standards - all evolved gradually, with the investor participating in the design process and adjustments being made continuously.
The attic apartment is contemporary, airy, bright, and the essence of the design is derived from the character of the Art Nouveau house. The building retains the original Art Nouveau railings, etched glass, decorative grilles... In the interior design, there are no replicas, but rather the use of the given formal language. The materials used are substantial and traditional: authentic original brick, solid oak and walnut wood, glass, exposed raw steel elements, sintered, fired, unglazed, hand-packed historical tiles, glass, linen, wool, cast iron, etc. The tile pattern in the apartment's hall is derived from the full-colored pattern of preserved tiles in the hallways and landings of the house. It has been abstracted and translated into a black-and-white form. Almost all furniture is custom-made from solid oak and walnut wood.
Emphasis is placed on the processing of details, the quality of workmanship, and the materials used. It is not about effect, it is not about design; everything is based on essence. Ordinary, but quality and beautiful.
The technological solution for heating, cooling, and air conditioning corresponds to the current standard.
