The definition of space in the landscape as a "room" responds to the brief from the municipality of Modrava and the management of the Šumava National Park, which plans to create several resting places with information for Šumava tourists. The first room is located at the confluence of the Modravský and Roklanský streams, from which the Vydra river is formed. The extraordinary landscape of Modrava poses a challenge for an unconventional approach in working on these tourist-attractive sites.
The object of the resting place represents a walkable platform inspired by the plant form of a leaf. The triangular form itself creates static stiffness, and thus does not require additional bracing. The entire assembly is divided into two squares and 9 triangles so that individual parts can be manufactured from standardly sold grid parts measuring 2 x 3 m. The leaf is not anchored to the ground in any way; it is simply placed on it, with the irregularity of the terrain being leveled by 9 separate supports, allowing for rectification. Two transparent glass panels are placed around the perimeter of the leaf, which will serve as information panels. On the walkable grid surface, chairs and tables are arranged, which, together with the shape of the leaf, create the impression of a "living room."
The room in the landscape is a kind of reflection on where the landscape ends or begins, and conversely, where a person defines their territory. Because this is not a standard definition of space, this boundary is intentionally not clearly defined. We feel that we are entering something else, yet we are still surrounded by the environment. Even the glass panels do not create a significant barrier between us and nature. Thus, one is exposed to a feeling that should simulate the comfort of a living room completely surrounded by nature.
The entire project was designed from the beginning in close collaboration with the supplier and the structural engineer. Because they are elements manufactured in a workshop, it was possible to bring only the individual pieces to the site and then assemble them together in one day. The resulting platform was welded into two pieces - both for transportability and for the sake of galvanization.
