Project of reconstruction and loft conversion in the historic center of Bratislava
It was a challenge for multiple reasons. Apart from the demanding logistics in a complicated historic environment, it was a challenge to deal with the disposition of a difficult - very narrow and significantly elongated space.
The goal was to create a representative modern apartment on a relatively small area that meets current housing demands.
I chose maximum possible openness and mutual connectivity of the individual functional zones. Each room communicates with neighboring ones not only along the layout but also vertically. The openness of the space serves this intention.
I applied a minimalist approach, and thanks to the puristic layout, I allowed a few pieces of furniture and precise carpentry elements to stand out. I paid great attention to the selection and combination of materials, surfaces, and colors. For the wooden elements, I chose a Champagne color that highlights the contrast with the roughness of the exposed concrete surfaces and the black color used on the walls, the kitchen countertop, and the metal shelving system. The hanging cast iron fireplace is also black, serving as a natural dominant feature of the space.
Everything - layout, color, and material solution is subordinated from the beginning to one intention - namely, to allow as much natural light as possible into each room. Along the entire floor plan, a glass wall formed by sliding windows runs through both levels. A large part of the sloped roof area is fitted with skylights. This allows, in addition to perfect lighting, the possibility to perceive changes in illumination and atmospheric moods throughout the day and the seasons. The ample glazing also provides the opportunity to take advantage of the view of the city's skyline as a significant spatial element. It becomes like a 4th wall in most rooms. The exterior and interior thus come into a dialogue and mutual intertwining. This makes the apartment feel larger than it actually is, which was also one of the desired goals.
