TGH-48 Car Park
Architect: Savin Sever
Address: Ambrožev trg 4, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Completion:1969

The architecture of the TGH-48 car park demonstrates all the knowledge gained when developing the Triplex car parks.
Here the problem of parking in the city was solved with the extremely efficient use of space. Sever developed a systém whereby the number of car parking spaces could optionally be incresed by adding new storeys. The only limitation on adding the storeys is the height of the stairways and length of the vehicle acces. The two-way traffic system, internal communications, and spacious parking spaces allow safe and simple parking.
The building is composed of two cylindrical volumes linked by ramps bridging only the mezzanine floors between the plateaus to be entirely horizontal with the ramp overcoming the height difference. On each plareau there are 24 garage spaces arranged around the circumference, large enough to be easily used, and of a slightly conical shape due to the car park's cylindrical form.
The structure has a massive reinforced concrete frame. The central pier with an 11-metre diameter carries the ceiling plate, which ends in the facade with the parapet, while the rest of the top is glassed. The huge glass surface in the facade and the indoor glass doors allow light to freely enter the building. „This building has a self-sufficient secluded character and has no relationship with the surrounding space“. The exterior is marked by uniform structure. The prefabricated reinforced concrete elements forming the facade coating and welded to the skeleton are disposed around the circumferences. „This unconventional approach has as a consequence a clear-form exterioer with propably the most obvious industrial appearance of all similar works by Sever“. Nevertheless, the exterior seems light and transparent. The concrete elements of an interesting shape which alternate glass bands and strong verticals piercing through the circumference give the building a special character, an artistic expression stemming from its structure. This building with which Sever propably draws closest to the aesthetics of Brutalism.
