Memorial to the fighters and victims for the freedom of the homeland

Memorial to the fighters and victims for the freedom of the homeland
Address: Štefánikovo náměstí, Staré Město, Liberec, Czech Republic
Project:1999
Completion:2000

The first joint work of the Stolín brothers defies the established notion of a memorial. Both authors received an Honorary Award from the Grand Prix of Architects in 2001 in the category of Visual Art in Architecture for this realization.
The memorial consists of two gridded metal walls and only "comes to life" upon the visitor’s entry, when lights, airflow, and moving electronic texts about the dates and locations of battles, to which the memorial is dedicated, are automatically activated. Soil from 9 battlefields of World War II has been placed inside the memorial. It should also be noted that the memorial to the fighters and victims for the freedom of the homeland is aptly located in a park in the square, one entire side of which is formed by a historic building - barracks - where soldiers have been stationed continuously since 1867.
