Museum of Post and Communication

Museum of Post and Communication
Architect: Günter Behnisch
Address: Schaumainkai 53, Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Completion:1984-90

The cult creator of German high-tech deconstruction Günter Behnisch is the author of the specialized museum of the German Post in Frankfurt. The not very large building on the banks of the Main is located near Meier's Museum of Applied Arts and, along with the Museum of Architecture, creates the Frankfurt museum district. The inviting entrance adorned with technical finesse leads into a sculpturally conceived space of the main hall, dominated by a staircase to the upper floor and a glass cylindrical section of the facade that illuminates the exhibition in the basement. This glass segment penetrating into the prism points to the creator's interest in deconstructivism, supported by a number of sculptural elements in the interior.
The exhibition itself is very playful and will particularly appeal to younger visitors. The history of the German Post is demonstrated by a range of exhibits, models, and contact sculptures. Personally, I prefer the flock of sheep made of telephone cord wool with its ringing bleats. The Museum of the German Post is a wonderful example of a monothemed museum.
