The government council blessed the idea of a new use for the former Lohnhof prison (The Court of Retribution). Consideration was given to 16 high-standard residential units in the former office wing, a Museum of Music in the men's section, and an inn in the women's prison. The museum includes dining and storage operations, a training hall, music teaching rooms, workshops, and a community room with a library for the English-speaking community. The basement (under the museum) serves for jazz performances.
The Lohnhof planning and construction committee, which was composed of representatives from the canton and the foundation (Dr. Bernard Christ, Stephanie Hoffmann, Peter C. Hoffmann), selected the future function from 46 proposals after many interviews and research. The chosen ideas were operationally specified. The Lohnhof Basel Foundation offered 5 million francs primarily for the reconstruction of the women's wing. First and foremost, users were sought who would not require any subsidies. The apartments were not subsidized in any way. The 5 million francs from the foundation must not be confused with a donation of 6 million francs that came from a private individual for the reconstruction, furnishing, and operation of the Museum of Music.
The museum preserved traces of the recent history - the outer shell and spatial structure of the prison (1835-1995). The construction of the museum and its facilities (1996-2000) were financed through modest donations.
The exhibition includes around 650 instruments. It is housed in 3 floors, where 24 prison cells serve as exhibition cabinets. The themes span European music history over the last half millennium. The theme "Music in Basel" on the ground floor places instruments into musical and social contexts. The theme "Concert, Choir, and Dance" on the first floor focuses on musical styles, while the theme "Festive Parade, Rest, and Signals" on the second floor addresses musical events.
The exhibition is accompanied by two hundred examples of music that visitors can choose from via an interactive information system. The total usable area of 900 m² includes a multipurpose space (90 m²) and one room for temporary exhibitions.
For some, this is too harsh an intervention in the historical environment. The uninterrupted architectural history allowed the Swiss to get to where they are now.
