The PLATO Gallery has moved from the temporary spaces of the Bauhaus to entirely new premises in the complex of former slaughterhouses right next to the Bauhaus, which are being adapted for gallery operations. As part of the design, we focus on furniture elements that are not a permanent part of the building. The main point of the design is the furniture for the café, entrance hall, corridor, open hall on the first floor, offices, and residential rooms.
Furniture
For the newly established institution, we decided to create an original series of furniture based on local traditions. All products were created in the Moravian region with the aim of building on interwar craftsmanship. Tables, chairs, and armchairs are made from bent chrome tubes and modified panels made from recyclables. For PLATO, a series of unique products has thus been created. The space of the multifunctional hall on the first floor can be divided as needed using welding curtains referencing local steelmaking traditions.
From meat production to vegetable production
Even though the slaughterhouses now have a new role dedicated to art, we perceived it as essential to maintain some form of food production in the original spaces. A vegetable nursery was installed in the café space - a hydroponic wall capable of producing 900 herbs and salads monthly at minimal costs for water and energy. The public will thus have the opportunity to taste salads grown directly in the gallery's premises, and at the same time, they can take the grown vegetables home.
Nature
Plants have become an integral part of the interior concept. In both public spaces and offices, we brought a form of nature through houseplants, which not only eliminate CO2 but also enhance the building's environment. We were inspired by the hall of the Ostrava Main Railway Station, which is full of palm trees.
