Supporters of non-Euclidean geometry will find satisfaction in the case of a family house (550 m²) from the workshop of the Dutch UN Studio. The Möbius strip is essentially a spatial entity formed by connecting the ends of a classic 2D strip, but with one end rotated by 180°. Ben van Berkel did not stop at one rotation; instead, he developed an ambitious spiral that results in a transformation from Bézier curves into an expressive angular deconstructivist form.
The fundamental concept of the house is not non-Euclidean onanism in space, but rather an operational diagram of family life. Van Berkel is a deepener of the theory of diagrams, flows, and currents. The Möbius strip proved to be a suitable geometric material for meeting the residents' needs (the question remains to what extent the principle of design function-form is objective, whether the form-function worked rather, in any case, it is an excellent house…). Each of the two residents experiences their life diagrams in one of the strips. As the strips twist and occasionally intersect in space, their lives are also divided into private and social components. Another point of design is the connection between the surrounding garden and the house. The architect likens staying in the house to the feelings experienced in the
Kröller-Müller park.
The manifestation of the spacetime diagram is expressed in reality by a reinforced concrete monolithic structure. In addition to concrete, glass plays a broad role in the composition of the house. The furniture is often part of the monolithic structure. The interior space is a celebratory poem on the phenomena of penetration and flow.
Even though the initial feelings when perceiving the Möbius house associate with the continuation of the deconstructivist movement, we are witnessing a new stage of architectural development. Questions of spacetime and operational diagrams enter the design process. Similar to the museum
Het Valkhof in Nijmegen, Ben van Berkel managed to merge operational flow with the form of the object, which is not often the case with some projects of e-architects.
