The Kuggen office building is located in the former industrial district of Lindholmen in Gothenburg. The area on the opposite bank of the historic center is slowly becoming a sought-after location for study, work, and living.
The name of the building 'Kuggen' translates to gear in Swedish. Wingårdh's design significantly differs in color and shape from the surrounding administrative buildings. The expressive character of the building is justified by two aspects: high energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. Each of the five above-ground floors is slightly cantilevered over the lower one. On the southern side, the cantilever is slightly larger than on the north, achieving nearly uniform shading. On the top floor, there are sunshades mounted on the façade, supplemented by solar collectors on the southern side. Throughout the day, the building appears slightly different at every moment. Another advantage of the chosen shape is the maximization of office floor area relative to the façade area. The chosen window shape also arises from the desire for maximal energy efficiency. The upward-opening triangular windows allow natural light into the interior only where it makes the most sense: near the ceiling, where it can then penetrate as deeply into the building as possible. The material used for the façade – glazed terracotta tiles in various shades of red – was chosen for its extremely long lifespan. However, the designers took into account not only ecology and durability but also the health of the users: the entire building contains only one elevator to encourage the use of the stairs as the main communication element, enhancing social contacts and the health of the building's users.
