The hall is used for the school's social and cultural events, inaugural speeches, graduations, awarding honorary doctorates, lectures, and seminars. The quality and potential of the hall have degraded over time, which is why the university leadership decided on its reconstruction.
The existing condition of the hall was quite varied – there were non-original parquet floors, partially original windows, a collection of ceramic sculptures on the walls, non-original ceilings, chandeliers, and carpets. Most of these interventions dated back to the 1970s and exhibited low craftsmanship quality. In contrast, the original design by ac. arch. Lubomír Šlapeta from the late 1940s was a significant and cultured contribution in its time. We aimed to reflect this reality in our project by loosely rehabilitating the architect's original vision. All new interventions are guided by the spirit and aesthetics of the original design.
The proposal for surface modifications is based on the original solution using white walls and wood paneling, along with wooden flooring. The walls were treated with a puntinato surface, lime plaster smoothed with stainless steel trowels with marble chippings. The original distinct ribs, accentuating the space of the hall, were restored. The original drawings of the lamps were also found, and copies were made by the company Ateh based on them. A total of 160 Opus folding chairs designed by prominent Finnish designer Jukka Järvisalo were installed. In the future, the existing tubular functionalist chairs by architect Šlapeta intended for professors will be refurbished.
