The name of the professor from the Vienna University of Technology, Karl Schwanzer, is most often associated with administrative buildings that successfully connect to interwar modernism. Schwanzer primarily focused on construction, which subsequently shaped unique spaces. However, today in Vienna, we can find several of Schwanzer's sacred buildings made of exposed brick.
The Church of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is located in the 22nd district of Vienna in the Donaustadt neighborhood in the northern part of the city. The local church was founded by the Order of Belgian Cross Bearers, which is based on the teachings of Saint Augustine. Construction of the church began in 1970, and it was solemnly consecrated in 1972 (in 1974 it became an independent chapel and in 1979 it was elevated to the status of a parish).
The floor plan of the parish comprises three overlapping circles of the same diameter and differing heights (the tallest being the church, followed by the community center, and the lowest being the central entrance area). The theme of the Holy Trinity is repeated in the church, where the altar is situated in a raised position under the central skylight, complementing the tabernacle with the baptismal font in a composition of an equilateral triangle (designed by Professor Walter Augmüller in 1971). The wall tapestries are by the painter Maximilian Florian from 1954. Next to the church stands a steel sculpture by Alois Heidel from 1970. In 1986, organs from the company Walcker-Mayer were installed in the church.
In the eastern wing, the pastor resides, and there is also a community center and a kindergarten for two groups of children. The central inner courtyard, with a mature tree and a water fountain, creates an atmosphere of a paradise garden and serves as an intimate place for contemplation amid the relaxed layout of the post-war housing estate. Circular segments are also reflected in the surrounding areas of the church, where they form retaining walls, stairs, and paving.
